Chapter 11

The next morning the girls stood together at the top of the temple steps to say their goodbyes. Far below them at the bottom of the stairs, a small group of soldiers waited, led by the man Phanessa has seen Priestess Adira speaking to the night before. But the young women ignored their presence, focused only on making their farewells to Damika. Raidea looked a bit worse for wear thanks to the long night prior, and she patted Phanessa’s shoulder awkwardly as she dabbed at her own misty eyes. Petra, to everyone’s surprise, wept openly, flinging her arms around Damika and wailing something nonsensical into her shoulder. Damika merely rocked her a bit, rubbing soothing circles on her back before dumping her small friend into the arms of Taruka. As for Phanessa, she stood straight backed and as stoically as she could. She knew how hard leaving was for Damika and she was determined not to make it worse for her. The older girl made her rounds, hugging and kissing her friends with a cheery smile on her face. If it seemed to any of them that the grin did not quite reach her eyes, they made no comment on it, and merely gave her their best strained smiles in return. Finally Damika stood in front of Phanessa, standing on the step directly below hers so that their line of sight almost matched. The other girls backed away a little to give them some privacy.

Phanessa made the first move, wrapping her arms around her friend’s neck and squeezing her tight. Damika’s arms went around her waist and they stood swaying for a long moment before Damika abruptly pulled away. She framed Nessa’s face in her hands and kissed her swiftly, half on her cheek, half on the corner of her mouth before turning and making her way down the long steps. Phanessa lifted her hand to touch the small patch of skin that still tingled from Damika’s lips, ignoring the stinging behind her eyes. If Damika looked back, she would not see her crying.

But Damika never looked back.
